A Parent’s Guide to Online Safety, Plagiarism, Privacy, and Responsible AI Use


Artificial intelligence has arrived in your child’s life — whether or not you have introduced it, whether or not their school has a policy, and whether or not you fully understand how it works. It is in their homework tools, their tutoring platforms, the recommendation algorithms shaping what they watch and read, and the chatbots some of them are quietly turning to for emotional support.


A 2024 Barna Group survey found that 72% of parents are concerned about AI’s impact on their children and teens. That concern is reasonable. But it is also worth saying plainly: AI itself is not the threat. The threat is uninformed use — by children who do not understand what they are interacting with, by schools that have not established clear norms, and by parents who feel too far behind the technology to have the conversation.


This article is designed to change that. It covers five interconnected concerns that come up consistently in conversations with families: AI safety, plagiarism and academic integrity, screen time in schools, responsible use, and student privacy. For each, we offer what the research says and what you can actually do about it.



Where Things Stand: The Numbers Parents Need to Know

Before diving into each topic, it helps to understand the scale of what we’re dealing with. AI in education is not a future concern. It is already the present reality.

 

Key Statistics at a Glance

85% of teachers and 86% of students  —  used AI tools during the 2024–25 school year (SchoolAI, 2025)

72% of parents  —  are concerned about AI’s impact on children and teens (Barna Group, 2024)

66% of parents  —  see kids becoming too dependent on AI for school as a major concern (Barna, 2024)

~90% of students  —  know about ChatGPT; 89% report using it for homework (Forbes / GovTech)

64%  —  of students were disciplined for AI-related academic dishonesty in 2023–24, up from 48% the prior year (GovTech)

Only 52% of districts  —  actively notify parents about which AI tools are used in classrooms (Future of Privacy Forum, 2024)

42% of school districts  —  using AI tools had not executed Data Processing Agreements with their AI vendors (CDT, 2024)

1,325% increase  —  in reports to NCMEC’s CyberTipline involving generative AI in 2024 — from ~4,700 to 67,000 reports

 

These numbers tell a clear story: AI adoption in schools and among children is rapid and widespread. The policies, conversations, and literacy to support it have not kept pace. That gap is where the risks live.


1. AI Safety for Kids: What Parents Actually Need to Understand

When parents worry about AI safety, they are often thinking about several different things at once: inappropriate content, emotional manipulation, exposure to harmful material, and the sense that their child is interacting with something they don’t fully understand and cannot fully supervise.


These concerns are not overblown. The risks are real, documented, and evolving quickly. But they are also navigable... especially when parents understand what they are.


The “Empathy Gap” in AI Systems

A 2024 peer-reviewed paper in Learning, Media and Technology introduced the concept of the “empathy gap” in large language models: the risk that AI systems respond to children’s personal disclosures in ways that are inappropriate, dismissive, or potentially harmful, because they lack the genuine empathy and judgment that a trained human would bring to those moments.


When a child tells an AI chatbot they are struggling with a relationship, feeling hopeless, or experiencing something upsetting, the AI may respond plausibly without responding appropriately. It can simulate care without providing it. Researchers studying teen AI use (Wang & Yu, University of Illinois, presented at IEEE Security & Privacy 2025) found that teenagers frequently use generative AI chatbots as therapy assistants or emotional confidants... precisely because these tools offer the experience of non-judgmental support without the vulnerability of real human connection.


This is worth understanding as a parent. The appeal is real. The risk is also real: children who substitute AI for human emotional support miss the genuine co-regulation, attunement, and relationship that actually builds resilience. The AI does not know your child; it generates responses that feel personal without being so.


Content Safety and Platform Risks

Not all AI tools are built with children in mind. The BBB National Programs’ Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) has investigated and taken action against AI products marketed to children that failed to adequately moderate unsafe content (cases including KidGeni, August 2024, and Buddy AI, February 2025). Even AI tools with content filters can surface problematic material, because imperfect moderation is a documented feature of the technology landscape, not an edge case.


The NSPCC (UK child protection organization) documented in their 2025 and 2026 reports that generative AI is increasingly being weaponized to bully, harass, groom, extort, and mislead children... well beyond the concern about AI-generated child sexual abuse material that tends to dominate headlines. Deepfake technology, AI-generated impersonation, and algorithmic targeting of vulnerable teens are active concerns.


What Parents Can Do: AI Safety

Have the foundational conversation:

  • Explain what AI chatbots are and are not: they are software that generates plausible-sounding responses based on patterns in data. They are not people, and they do not actually know or care about your child (Penn State Extension, 2026)

  • Help your child understand that AI can generate convincing responses to personal or emotional disclosures without being equipped to handle those disclosures appropriately

  • Make AI use a topic you discuss openly, not a secret or a forbidden subject. When children feel they cannot talk to parents about their AI use, they are more likely to use it in ways that go unchecked

Practical safeguards:

  • Use child accounts with high-privacy defaults on any device. Disable microphone and camera access in apps that do not require it

  • Review which AI tools your child’s school is using and whether those tools are designed for educational use with appropriate safety controls

  • Understand that consumer AI tools (the free version of any major chatbot) have fundamentally different privacy and content safety profiles than enterprise or education-specific versions of the same platforms

  • Check your router or device settings for parental controls that can limit access to AI chat platforms

  • Know that detection of AI deepfakes and manipulation is a growing literacy skill for children, alongside traditional media literacy


By age:

  • Ages 5‑10: AI tools should be avoided except in carefully designed, supervised educational contexts. Children at this age cannot evaluate AI limitations or recognize manipulation

  • Ages 11–14: Begin explicit conversations about what AI is, how it generates responses, and why it cannot replace human relationships. Establish clear rules about which tools are permitted and for what purposes

  • Ages 14–18: Shift toward teaching critical evaluation — how to assess AI outputs for accuracy, bias, and appropriateness; how to recognize when an AI response is designed to feel personal without being so

 

2. AI and Academic Integrity: The Plagiarism Question

The conversation about AI and academic honesty in schools is happening everywhere, including in living rooms, staff meetings, and school board sessions... and the ground keeps shifting. The numbers are striking: discipline rates for AI-related academic dishonesty rose from 48% to 64% in a single school year. Approximately 39% of students report using large language models to answer assessments (Frontiers in Education, 2024). And yet the policies are lagging: as of 2024–25, fewer than one-quarter of school districts in Florida explicitly referenced AI in their student codes of conduct (University of Florida, 2025).


What this means in practice is that students, parents, and teachers are often operating without clear shared expectations — and students are sometimes being disciplined for behavior they did not fully understand was prohibited.


The Spectrum of AI Academic Dishonesty

Research distinguishes between types of AI misuse in academic contexts, and the distinctions matter for how we talk to children about it:

  • Direct substitution: Submitting AI-generated content as one’s own work without disclosure or modification. This is the clearest form of academic dishonesty and is treated as such at virtually every institution with a policy

  • Undisclosed assistance: Using AI to significantly restructure, rewrite, or complete portions of work without disclosure, when the assignment expects original student effort

  • Paraphrasing to avoid detection: Lightly editing AI outputs to obscure their origins, or using paraphrasing tools to defeat AI detection software. Researchers note this is increasingly common (Frontiers, 2025)

  • AI hallucinations and false citations: Using AI-generated citations or “facts” that the student neither verified nor understood... a specific risk that has produced serious academic consequences, including a doctoral dissertation rejected for fabricated literature review citations

  • Gray area uses: Brainstorming, grammar checking, idea generation, outline assistance. These uses are often permitted but vary by institution and assignment

  • The most important long-term concern is not catching cheating — it is the impact on the student. Researchers call it “cognitive offloading”: the tendency to accept AI-generated answers without engaging with the underlying reasoning. Studies published in 2025 document that students who rely heavily on AI for academic work show measurable declines in analytical reasoning, independent problem-solving, and study motivation. The concern is not just ethical; it is developmental. The thinking that assignments are designed to build cannot be outsourced without consequence.


What Parents Can Do: Academic Integrity

  • Know your school’s policy. Ask for it directly, in writing. If the school does not have one, that is also useful information — and an appropriate thing to raise with a teacher or administrator

  • Have the values conversation, not just the rules conversation. The question to discuss with your child is not just “what is the rule” but “what is the point of doing the work yourself?” The answer is about building actual skills and understanding, not just performing completion

  • Distinguish use cases explicitly. Brainstorming an essay topic with AI is different from having AI write the essay. Asking AI to explain a concept you don’t understand is different from copying its answer to a homework problem. These distinctions are worth naming

  • Ask your child what they actually learned. This is a simple, powerful check. If they cannot explain what they submitted in their own words, they may be getting a grade without getting an education

  • Watch for the hallucination risk specifically. If your child is using AI for research, help them understand that AI frequently generates plausible-sounding but fabricated citations, statistics, and facts. Everything AI produces for academic use should be independently verified

 

A Conversation Starter for Families

Rather than approaching AI use as a rules enforcement issue, consider trying this frame with your child or teen:

“AI can do the assignment for you. But it can’t do the learning for you. The point of the work isn’t the paper — it’s what happens in your brain when you write it. What does it feel like when you use AI to write something, versus when you write it yourself?”

Most students, when asked honestly, can identify the difference in what they take away. Starting from that recognition, rather than from rules and consequences, tends to produce more durable behavior change.

 

3. Screen Time in Schools: What the Research Says and What to Ask

The question of screens in schools has become more urgent as AI-powered tools are integrated into classroom instruction. In the 2024–25 school year, 85% of teachers reported using AI tools — a remarkable adoption rate for technology this new. Parents are right to ask what that means for their children’s learning, attention, and development.

The honest answer is that we do not yet have strong longitudinal data on AI-specific educational tools and developmental outcomes. What we do have is a broader research base on technology and learning that is relevant, and a growing body of concern from educators themselves.


What Educators Are Observing

A 2025 EDUCAUSE Review article (written by a student) captured the paradox well: AI assistance often produces better-looking outputs with less cognitive engagement. Students get results without doing the thinking that produces durable learning. Some instructors have responded by returning to in-person, handwritten exams and on-demand essays precisely to reclaim contexts where genuine cognitive work must happen.


Research published in Frontiers in Education (2025) documented that heavy reliance on AI tools correlates with “substantial declines in analytical reasoning capabilities and decreased study motivation.” Younger students are noted to be particularly susceptible to these cognitive offloading effects, because their analytical capacities are still actively developing.


At the same time, the research is not uniformly negative. When AI tools are used as scaffolding — personalized feedback, adaptive practice, guided questioning — rather than as answer generators, studies find improvements in learning outcomes. The critical variable is not AI itself but how it is used and what cognitive work it supports versus replaces.


Questions to Ask Your Child’s School

Most parents are not given information about specific AI tools used in their child’s classroom. The 2024 Future of Privacy Forum report found that only 52% of school districts actively notify parents about the AI tools used in classrooms. You have both a right and a responsibility to ask.

  • Which AI tools or platforms is my child using at school, and for what purposes?

  • What is the school’s policy on student use of AI for assignments? Is it the same across all teachers and subjects, or does it vary?

  • Has the school reviewed the privacy policies of the AI tools it uses? Is there a Data Processing Agreement in place with each vendor?

  • What data about my child is collected by these tools, and how is it stored, used, and protected?

  • How does the school distinguish between AI-assisted learning (beneficial) and AI-substituted learning (concerning)?

  • What training have teachers received on using AI tools in educationally sound ways?

You are entitled to ask these questions, and a school that has thought carefully about responsible AI adoption should be able to answer them. Schools that cannot answer them may not have done the necessary due diligence.

 

4. How Kids Should Actually Use AI: A Framework for Responsible Engagement

Children and teenagers are going to use AI. The question is not whether but how. Rather than defaulting to prohibition (which tends to push use underground) or permissiveness (which leaves children without any framework), the most effective approach is one that builds genuine literacy: the ability to engage with AI thoughtfully, critically, and with an accurate understanding of what it is and is not.


Digital literacy, experts note, includes the ability to understand how AI generates responses, recognize manipulative design, evaluate accuracy, and identify the limits of AI “empathy” and reasoning. This is not a skill children develop automatically by using AI tools. It requires explicit teaching — at school and at home.


The Scaffold vs. Substitute Distinction

The most useful frame for responsible AI use is the difference between AI as a scaffold and AI as a substitute. Research consistently shows that these two modes of use produce dramatically different outcomes:

 

AI as Scaffold (Supports Learning)

•       Using AI to explain a concept you don’t understand, then working the problem yourself

•       Asking AI to give feedback on a draft you wrote independently

•       Using AI to generate multiple perspectives on a topic, then forming your own view

•       Checking your own work or logic against AI output critically

•       Using AI to practice skills (e.g., conversation in a second language, math drills) with real effort

•       Asking AI to ask you questions rather than give you answers

 

AI as Substitute (Bypasses Learning)

•       Asking AI to write an essay, answer a homework question, or solve a problem you haven’t attempted

•       Accepting AI output as correct without verification

•       Submitting AI-generated content as your own without disclosure

•       Using AI instead of thinking through a problem, decision, or creative task

•       Relying on AI for emotional support instead of reaching out to real people

•       Letting AI summarize reading material rather than engaging with the text

 

By Age: What Responsible Use Looks Like

Elementary Age (Ages 6–11)

Children this age are primarily encountering AI through school tools, educational apps, and voice assistants. Responsible use at this stage is about building foundational understanding: AI is a tool made by people, it can be wrong, and it is not a person.

  • Talk about AI tools they use at school. Ask: “How do you think that works?” Curiosity is the right frame

  • When they use a voice assistant (“Hey Siri, what is the capital of France?”), discuss the difference between looking something up and knowing something

  • Establish that AI is not a source of emotional support. Real feelings go to real people

  • Ensure any AI tools used at home are specifically designed for children and have appropriate privacy controls


Middle School (Ages 11–14)

This is the age when AI use for academic work typically begins, when social media algorithms become more influential, and when some children start using AI chatbots for emotional conversation. It is also the most critical window for building AI literacy.

  • Have explicit conversations about academic integrity as it applies to AI: what your school’s rules are, and what your family’s values are

  • Teach them to verify. AI hallucinates. If something AI says matters, it needs to be checked against a reliable source

  • Discuss how recommendation algorithms work. The content they see is not random; it is selected by systems designed to maximize engagement, not wellbeing

  • Address the emotional support use directly: “A lot of teens talk to AI chatbots about personal stuff. I want you to know that if you’re dealing with something hard, I want to be someone you can talk to. AI can seem supportive, but it doesn’t actually know you.”

  • Work through examples together: “If your teacher gives you an essay prompt, what would be the difference between using AI to brainstorm and using AI to write the essay?”


High School (Ages 14–18)

High schoolers are sophisticated enough to engage with the deeper questions about AI: how it works, who designs it and why, what its limitations are, and what it means for the future of work and learning. The goal at this stage is genuine critical thinking, not just rule-following.

  • Discuss cognitive offloading directly. Research consistently shows that students who have AI do the cognitive work score worse on genuine comprehension and reasoning tasks. Ask: “What do you think happens to your thinking if AI is always doing it for you?”

  • Talk about the difference between AI confidence and accuracy. AI systems can generate very confident-sounding wrong answers. Learning to identify and verify AI output is a skill that will matter in college and in careers

  • Introduce the concept of prompt literacy: better questions to AI produce better outputs. Learning to interact with AI thoughtfully is itself a skill

  • Discuss the social and ethical dimensions: what does it mean that AI can produce deepfakes? How do you verify whether something you see online is real? What are the implications for trust, democracy, and knowledge?

  • Support them in developing their own framework for AI use — not just following rules, but making principled decisions they can articulate

 

5. Privacy in AI Systems: What’s Being Collected and What You Can Do

Student data privacy in the age of AI is genuinely complex — and most parents are not getting the information they need from schools. A 2024 report from the Future of Privacy Forum found that 89% of K–12 schools use AI-enabled education technology, but only 34% had reviewed these tools’ privacy policies. Meanwhile, 42% of school districts using AI tools had not executed Data Processing Agreements with their AI vendors.


The data that AI educational tools collect about your child can include academic performance data, behavioral patterns, time-on-task measurements, emotional state inferences, writing samples, and in some cases biometric data (where proctoring tools are involved). The question of what happens to that data — who can access it, whether it is used to train AI models, how long it is retained, whether it can be sold or shared — is often not answered in the communication families receive.


The Legal Landscape: What Protects Your Child

Two federal laws provide the baseline framework for student data privacy in the United States, though both have significant limitations in the AI context:

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)

FERPA protects personally identifiable information in student education records and gives parents the right to access, amend, and control disclosure of those records. It covers the records schools create — grades, attendance, disciplinary notes. A significant limitation in the AI context: FERPA was written before AI, and does not specifically address model training, algorithmic profiling, or generative AI that could reproduce student information in its outputs. Schools and vendors interpret FERPA’s application to AI inconsistently.


COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act)

COPPA governs what websites and apps can collect from children under 13, requiring verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information. The FTC finalized significant amendments to COPPA in January 2025, including requirements for separate consent for third-party data sharing and mandatory data retention policies. Importantly, schools can provide consent on behalf of parents for educational tools — but only when the data is used exclusively for educational purposes. When schools consent on behalf of parents, parents may not know what data is being collected or by whom. COPPA does not extend to teenagers.


As of 2025, more than 121 state laws provide additional student privacy protections beyond FERPA. California’s SOPIPA restricts EdTech vendors’ use of student data in particularly significant ways. The regulatory landscape is actively evolving.


The COPPA Gap: What Parents Often Don’t Know

When a school adopts an AI tutoring platform and provides consent on behalf of parents, those parents may receive no notification at all. The 2024 Future of Privacy Forum report documented that only 52% of school districts actively inform parents about specific AI tools used in classrooms. This means that nearly half of parents whose children are using AI tools at school have not been told which tools those are.

The December 2024 PowerSchool data breach — which affected 62 million students and demonstrated that even large, established education technology vendors are vulnerable — underscores that this is not a theoretical concern. Student data, once collected, can be exposed.


What Parents Can Do: Privacy

  • Request a list of all AI and EdTech tools your child uses at school. You are entitled to this information. A district that is managing its AI tools responsibly should be able to provide it

  • Ask whether the school has executed Data Processing Agreements with each AI vendor. A DPA specifies what data the vendor can collect, how it can be used, and what protections are in place. Vendors who cannot or will not provide compliance documentation are telling you something important

  • Ask specifically: Is student data being used to train AI models? Is it shared with third parties? How long is it retained? What happens to the data if the school stops using the tool?

  • For home AI use: read privacy policies before allowing your child to create an account on any AI platform. Look for whether the product is designed for children (COPPA-compliant) or is a general consumer product with adult-oriented data practices

  • Teach your child not to share personally identifying information with AI chatbots. Name, school, location, personal struggles, family information, and health details can be stored, logged, and potentially exposed

  • In the US, parents of children under 13 can request deletion of their child’s data from platforms that have collected it, under COPPA. Parents in states with stronger privacy laws (California, Virginia, Texas) may have additional rights

 

Privacy Red Flags: Questions to Ask About Any AI Tool Your Child Uses

•       Is this product designed for children, or is my child using an adult-oriented consumer product?

•       Does the free version fund itself through data collection or advertising?

•       Has the school signed a Data Processing Agreement with this vendor?

•       Is student data used to train or improve the AI model?

•       What happens to the data if the school discontinues the tool?

•       Who at the school is responsible for reviewing AI vendor privacy practices?

•       What was the outcome of the school’s most recent review of this tool’s privacy policy?

 

The Bigger Picture: What AI Literacy Actually Means

AI literacy is not the same as knowing how to use AI tools. It is a deeper set of capacities that will matter throughout your child’s education, career, and civic life: the ability to evaluate AI-generated information critically, understand how AI systems are designed and what incentives shape them, recognize the limits of AI reasoning and empathy, protect one’s own privacy and data, and make principled decisions about when to use AI and when to do the work oneself.


These capacities do not develop automatically through exposure. They require intentional teaching, and that teaching needs to happen both at school and at home. The families who have these conversations... not as lectures about rules, but as ongoing, curious explorations of a genuinely interesting and important set of questions... are the ones raising children who will be genuinely equipped to navigate this landscape.


You do not need to be a technology expert to have these conversations. You need to be curious, engaged, and honest about what you don’t know. Your child probably knows more than you about how specific tools work. You probably know more than they do about critical evaluation, long-term consequences, and what it means to do something yourself. The combination is the right place to start.


When AI Use Is a Signal of Something More

Sometimes children’s patterns of AI use (like other digital patterns) reflect something worth paying attention to beyond the technology itself. Consider reaching out for support if:

  • Your child is turning to AI chatbots as a primary source of emotional support, especially in the context of isolation, depression, or difficulty with peer relationships

  • Academic performance is deteriorating in ways that suggest skill gaps rather than just assignment completion issues...suggesting they may be completing work without building actual understanding

  • Your child cannot tolerate any academic challenge without immediately seeking a shortcut, whether through AI or other means, in ways that feel compulsive or anxiety-driven

  • There are concerns about attention, executive function, or learning differences that may be making academic work genuinely overwhelming — driving toward AI dependency as a coping strategy

  • You are seeing signs of social isolation, mood changes, or increasing reliance on digital interaction (AI or otherwise) as a substitute for real relationships


A comprehensive evaluation can clarify what is driving the pattern and identify the most effective support... which may be quite different depending on whether the underlying concern is learning-based, anxiety-based, or social-emotional.
